8 Steps to Build a Positive Attitude

Note: This Information is summarised and edited from “You Can Win” Book.

We form attitudes and habits that last a lifetime. And this includes both Positive and Negative attitude. We can change our attitudes. But it’s not that easy. It takes time.

Step 1: CHANGE THE FOCUS, LOOK FOR THE POSITIVE

We need to become positive good finders. We need to focus on the good instead of the bad. We need to look for the positive in every person. Everyone has a negative and a positive attitude. it’s up to us which attitude we want to nurture. We have to stop finding faults in others and look for the positive. From Childhood, we find faults in others, we discourage others and maybe the negative environment is the reason for this attitude. We have to change our Attitude. There is a great story of Andrew Carnegie, “Looking for the gold”.I’m mentioning that story below.

“As a young Scots boy, Andrew Carnegie came to America and started doing odd jobs. He ended up as one of the largest steel manufacturers in the united states.

At one time he had 43 millionaires working for him. Several decades ago, a million dollars used to be a lot of money; even today it is a lot of money. Someone asked Mr. Carnegie how he dealt with people? Andrew Carnegie replied “Dealing with people is like digging gold: When you go digging for an ounce of gold, you have to move tons of dirt to get an ounce of gold. But when you go digging, you don’t look for the dirt, you go looking for the gold.”

This story has a very important message for us all. We have to look for gold in people. We have to be a digger for gold. Every person has a negative attitude and a positive attitude, it’s up to us which attitude we want nurture. If you look for dirt in people you will find many.

Negative People will always criticise. They are termed as ‘Pessimists’. They are the energy suckers. They keep blaming others for their own mistakes. They don’t see the doughnut, only the hole. They believe that the sun shines only to cast shadows. They forget their blessings and count their troubles.

Step 2: MAKE A HABIT OF DOING IT NOW

”Never leave till tomorrow which you can do today”– Benjamin Franklin

We all know what procrastination leads to. In fact, we all have procrastinated at some point in our lives. It delays our success. It also brings negative attitude. If you want to be successful, you have to quit the habit of procrastination. Successful people don’t procrastinate. As soon as the learn something new they began to implement it, They began to execute it. You have to do the same. Life is too short.  Your time is limited. DO IT NOW.!

Step 3: Develop an Attitude of Gratitude

Count your blessings, not your troubles. By saying this I mean to be complacent. Take time to smell the roses. We hear what we want to hear and not what is being said. This is selective listening.

Count your blessings. Blessings are hidden treasures. Troubles are not.

Step 4: Get into a continuous Education Courses

We get Educated in Schools and Colleges. But do we really get educated in schools and colleges? Some do get educated but most don’t.

Intelletual Education influences the head and the Values-Based education influences the heart. Education which doesn’t influences the heart can be dangerous. If we want to maintain our respect, dignity and character in our society we have to learn values based education. We don’t need more academic education; we need more values based education. Character building and teaching values and ethics come in the formative years because a child is not born with this knowledge.

True education is influencing and training of both the head and the heart. There is a very great sentence quoting about this. An uneducated thief may steal from the freight car but an educated one may steal the entire railroad.

Whom do we call educated?

Educated persons are those who can choose wisely and courageously under any situations. If they have the ability to choose between good and bad, between wisdom and foolishness, between virtuousness and vulgarities, then they are educated.

Remember KNOWLEDGE IS NOT POWER. KNOWLEDGE IS ONLY POTENTIAL POWER. IT BECOMES POWER ONLY WHEN PUT INTO USE.

Step 5: BUILD A POSITIVE SELF- ESTEEM

Self-esteem is the way we feel about ourselves. When we feel good within, our productivity increases, our performance goes up, our relationships with people strengthens.

One of the best and the fastest way to build self-esteem is to do something for other who cannot pay you in cash or kind.

There are two kinds of people in this world. Takers and Givers. Taker eat well and giver sleep well. Givers have high self-esteem and they serve society.

Step 6: STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVE INFLUENCES

Teenagers of today’s generation lack self-esteem. They face peer pressure. Stay away from  Drugs, Alcohol and Smoking. Stay away from Pornography. Stay away from Negative Television Programs and Movies. Stay away from profanity or obscene Languages. Using obscene language shows a lack of self-esteem, self-control and discipline.

Step 7: LEARN TO LOVE THINGS THAT IS NEEDED TO BE DONE

”Start doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible” –St. Francis of Assisi

Elon Musk once said, “Don’t tell me what is possible, tell me what is needed to be done”. Some things are needed to be done whether we like it or not. If we began to love the task, the impossible becomes the possible.

Step 8: START YOUR DAY WITH A POSITIVE

Read or listen to something positive in the morning. Read some motivational books or watch motivational and inspirational videos on YouTube. Motivation is like a cleansing agent, it cleanses out all the dirt of negativity in your mind. Willaim James said, “If you are going to change your life, you need to start immediately and do it flamboyantly.”

Let’s Revise this up. In a nutshell, there are 8 steps to build a positive attitude:

  1. Change focus, look for the positive.
  2. Make a habit of doing it now.
  3. Develop an Attitude of Gratitude.
  4. Get into a continuous Educational Courses.
